A change of pace

Regardless of what holidays your family observes, December is a great time to switch up your regular routine. Here are a few ideas:

  • Do less structured work, and give your kids more free time to learn what interests them. This is definitely the approach my family takes. (Last week, I talked about how I do my own version of Homeschool Lite, and you can read about it here.)

  • Shift your focus. Instead of doing the wide range of subjects that you normally cover, take a couple weeks to focus on one area of study and hit it from lots of angles.

  • Try holiday-themed studies. Read lots of books, bake, and create stuff. Watch holiday movies and attend (virtually or in person) holiday concerts and plays.

  • Switch up your normal routine. Start later and/or end earlier in the day. Or maybe do school less days during the week.

  • Spend less time on hard-core academic work and more time learning life skills.

  • Let the kids plan a week of what they want to do. You might be surprised by what they suggest!

My family will be doing school through this week, and then we'll take off a couple weeks for Christmas and New Year's. How about you?
